PREFACE

Preface
A pair of birds flits through ashen skies,
While three trailing vines sway gently by.
Rabbits peek through autumn grasses thick,
Where stillness and motion breathe life’s rhythmic tick.
Modern and contemporary flower-and-bird paintings draw strength fromtradition, lived experience, and Western influences. These threads intertwine, creating infinite possibilities. Rooted in tradition, Liu observes nature, balancing emptiness and form to carve out his own realm.
His works live up to their names. The titles precede images, yet the paintings illuminate their essence. Life thrives in harmony, stirring within stillness and pulsing with vitality. Rare birds and wild sparrows burst with energy, their echoes lingering as if heard through walls. Sight, heart, and ear merge; form, brushwork, aura, spirit, and emotion coalesce. In a world shrouded in a gentle haze, the garden pulses with the rhythm of life. Among the wild flowers, grasses, trees, and stones, a sense of desolate beauty drifts. The creatures, both beasts and birds, come alive with a vividness akin to brushstrokes on a canvas. Long-armed gibbons dangle gracefully, while soaring falcons spread their majestic wings. Fluffy autumn ducks linger by the pond, admiring the solitary lotus, and green carp with wide eyes flick through the water weeds amidst the rippling blue waves. The air is pure and the atmosphere upright and wholesome. All is hushed in profound stillness, with the secluded valley wrapped in tranquilityand only the faint chirping of resting birds breaking the silence.
In his finger-ink paintings, his five fingers dance and sweep, embracing the winds from all directions as he splashes ink with unrestrained spontaneity. The lines, agile and ever-changing, stand firm with skeletal strength, while the ink seeps and blends with a transcendent grace, clinging like flesh. His brushwork is unbridled, breathing life into vivid forms that emerge within a misty, ethereal space. A gentle breeze seems to whisper through, animating the scene with a vibrant rhythm and imbuing it with a profound, serene mood. The entire canvas resonates with the desolate charm of autumn, where even the falling leaves gently drape over the ochre-hued hills.
Liu’s brushwork delves deep into the heart, emotions, and logic, blending dryness with moisture, bitterness with sweetness, in a harmonious interplay. At times, it captures the delicate lightness of cicada wings; at others, the rough, sandy texture of dragon scales. It can mimic the smooth tenderness of ointment or the rustling grace of withered leaves. When stillness is his muse, he employs light, meticulous strokes, rendering white clouds with a subtle wash, embodying a sense of solitary purity and lofty elegance. Yet, when dynamism takes over, his brush dances wildly, sweeping horizontally and vertically, with all bristles in unison, evoking the thunderous roar of lightning. His depictions of spring birds brim with vivid vitality and spirited grace, while his autumn fowl, startled and still, reveal an inner beauty that invites quiet contemplation. His renderings of fierce beasts and domestic fowl boast an archaic and extraordinary aesthetic, as if they were celestial beings from a divine realm, exuding an aura of pure serenity and bliss. They seem to step in and out of the canvas like gentle mountain streams, their presence slowly seeping into people’s heart with a naive simplicity and the tranquil melody of unspoiled symphony of nature. His portrait of the arhat captures the essence with bold, flowing lines, conveying a sense of vitality and spiritual completeness. The arhat appears as an ethereal soul lingering in sacred halls, lost in contemplation of otherworldly realms. Every movement of the arhat is grand and powerful, like titans of mountains and seas and his arms are capable of stirring the clouds with a mighty sweep. In his thematic bird-and-flower paintings, Liu endows the subjects with human-like qualities and profound symbolic meanings, infusing them with vibrant life. These works are imbued with philosophical depth and exquisite artistic vision, creating a harmonious and sublime visual experience that resonates deeply with viewers.
Liu inherits the essence of ancient traditions while boldly forging new paths, achieving a harmonious balance between his mind and hand. He infuses his brushwork with profound spirit, expressing his own unique soul and temperament. Blending inner richness, restraint, and beauty into a unified whole, his art exudes a gentle yet profound grace, embodying a noble and upright character that remains firmly rooted in the authentic lineage of tradition.
He draws inspiration from the past to transcend it, reviving and reinvigorating timeless traditions with a renewed vision. Guided by the profound wisdom of the traditional paintings, he strives tirelessly, turning inspiration into action.

PartⅠ.
Cosmic Expanse of Righteous Spirit
Opening Remarks
The paintings showcased in this section are far from ordinary depictions of scenery. They represent the most intuitive and awe-inspiring visual manifestation of Mr. Liu Wanming’s artistic philosophy, epitomizing the ultimate realization of the “realm of realism” he advocates. According to Liu Wanming, true “realism” does not entail passively copying nature; rather, its essence lies in the projection and elevation of the artist’s inner spirit. It necessitates that creators possess a “grand perspective” and “lofty realm” that transcend mere technical skills, requiring them to deeply integrate their artistic pursuits with the destiny of their nation and the currents of their times. With a reverence for national history and a compassionate concern for all people, they must courageously assume the cultural responsibility of “conveying moral truths through art” and “chronicling the spirit of the era”.
Under this philosophy, exquisite realism techniques and masterful modeling abilities are the essential “brush” for artists, but not the “soul” of creation. Without a profound sense of patriotism and historical responsibility, brushwork will ultimately degenerate into a mere empty shell of form, struggling to capture the majestic and profound spiritual essence that Chinese painting holds in the highest regard.
Taking a sweeping view of the paintings in this section, you can feel a powerful aura of “righteous spirit” permeating through them. In these artworks, the towering mountains seem to embody the resilient backbone and unyielding spirit of the nation, the surging rivers mirror the unceasing vitality of the times, and the vast expanse of clouds and mists express an open-minded cultural embrace. With his profound scholarship and exquisite craftsmanship, Mr. Liu Wanming has seamlessly blended rational composition, meticulous depiction, and majestic lyricism, achieving a dialectical unity that “embraces the vast while capturing the minute”.
These works are not merely odes to the landscapes of China. They are powerful expressions of cultural confidence and a grand narrative that fearlessly breaks new ground and forges ahead into the future while rooted in the thousand-year tradition. They beckon viewers to step inside, where, amidst the visual splendor, they embark on a spiritual journey where they engage in dialogue with history and resonate with the pulse of the times.

Equal Vision of All Things
Opening Remarks
This section features a substantial collection of Mr. Liu Wanming’s portrait sketches and calligraphic masterpieces. These works are far from being mere casual sketches outside his main artistic pursuits; instead, they are the pivotal practices through which he sustains his artistic vitality and refines his perceptual acuity and brushwork prowess. Like an exquisite and profound exploration into the fundamentals and inner realms, they unveil the rich foundations and diverse dimensions that lie beneath the grand structure of his artistic achievements.
For an artistic tree to soar skyward, its roots must delve deep into the fertile soil of nature, society, and life. Thus, we observe that the figures in his paintings are not merely portraits with precise forms, but also keen captures of the spirit of the age and the essence of individual personalities. Similarly, his landscape sketches transcend mere imitation of shapes and forms; Meanwhile, his profound calligraphy seamlessly integrates the essence of brushwork into the very fabric of his paintings, where every stroke and line exudes the rhythm of writing, epitomizing the supreme concept that Chinese painting and calligraphy share a common origin.
“Equal Vision of All Things” originates from the wisdom of traditional Chinese philosophy, advocating the breaking down of barriers between self and object, as well as among different categories, and observing all things with an equitable mindset. Mr. Liu Wanming adopts precisely this attitude when approaching diverse artistic mediums and themes. To him, figures, landscapes,, and calligraphy, despite their varied forms, share a unified artistic essence. Together, they form an organic whole that nourishes and reinforces each other in a continuous cycle. Calligraphy training has honed the strength and abstract aesthetic of his brushwork; sketching from nature has sharpened his insight in observing the world and life. All these seemingly diverse explorations have, in the end, seamlessly nourished and elevated his primary creative endeavors, providing the most solid and vibrant sustenance for his pursuit of “grand perspective” and “lofty realm”. This has propelled his art steadily forward into ever more profound and exalted territories.
The works in this section are the finest testament to the creative philosophy of “extensive observation, selective absorption, and profound accumulation leading to inspired expression”.
